Bayern face a tricky away tie in the DFB Cup last sixteen after the holders were drawn to face Bundesliga rivals VfB Stuttgart in the final match of the calendar year. The draw was made live on national TV early on Sunday evening by U-20 Women’s World Cup winner Alexandra Popp and Germany captain Michael Ballack.
The match on 21 or 22 December will be the second clash between the south German arch-rivals in the space of three days, as Bayern’s seventeenth and final match of the first half of the Bundesliga season is also away to Stuttgart on Sunday 19 December at 5.30 pm. VfB booked their place in the Round of 16 with a 3-1 win away to Chemnitz.
“There are easier draws, no question about it. Away to Stuttgart is always a real challenge,“ commented Bayern President Uli Hoeneß, speaking in the evening on Pay-TV station Sky, “but if you’re aiming to win the cup, you have to beat every club put in front of you.“
Bayern, the most successful side in DFB Cup history, have already crossed swords with VfB seven times in the competition. FCB have won six of the ties, with just one win for Stuttgart. The most recent cup meeting was on 27 January 2009, when Munich travelled to Stuttgart for a Round of 16 clash and chalked up a thumping 5-1 victory.
