Van Gaal: Winning was what mattered today

Bayern have begun the task of making up lost ground in the Bundesliga with a deserved 3-0 victory at home to Hannover, although an FCB side featuring a host of squad players took a little while to hit its stride. Three-goal Mario Gomez was the undisputed man of the match. “We’re only ten points off the top and we can catch that up, but winning was the most important thing today,” said boss Louis van Gaal.

Reaction to Bayern v Hannover

Louis van Gaal: “We didn’t play particularly well in the first half, but we scored with our first chance, which is always good. We were much better after Bastian Schweinsteiger came on in the second half. Mario Gomez scored for his national team, and now he’s scored three for us. It's extremely important for a striker, because his confidence will return now. I reckon we’ll see a very good Mario Gomez over the next few weeks."

Mario Gomez: “You always have more opportunities and chances to show what you can do when you play the full 90 minutes. I’m delighted it’s gone so well today. I’ve always known what I’m capable of. Provided I’m fit and healthy, I’ll score goals and do what I can to help the team. It all happened for me today, but I also benefited from three excellent assists.“

Mirko Slomka: “It was a good away performance from us for long periods, and we got at them nice and early in the first 20 minutes. But we lacked the conviction to go for goal and created no real chances. Bayern took advantage of our first mistake. We came out for the second half looking to get forward, apply pressure and drop some of our respect, but their second goal put an end to all that.”
