Mario Gomez’ first goal was actually the most difficult, a full-on volley from the rebound after Cluj keeper Eduard Stancioiu could only parry Andi Ottl’s drive. His second just required him to plant his right foot on a perfect lay-off. And the third was a one-on-one against Stancioiu, the striker coolly slotting past the home shot-stopper. Gomez 3, Cluj 0.
The 25-year-old impressed the watching millions with his clear-headed and clinical finishing on a foggy night in Cluj, claiming his maiden Champions League hat-trick. Gomez is only the second German to achieve the feat, emulating Sascha Rösler 12 years ago. Roy Makaay, in a 4-0 victory over Ajax six seasons back, and Ivica Olic six months ago in the 3-0 semi-final return in Lyon, are Gomez‘ predecessors in a Bayern shirt.
