Bayern versus Nürnberg is a fixture with a long history. Sunday’s meeting at the Allianz Arena will be the 53rd all-Bavaria derby in the history of the Bundesliga. There is also a well-established tradition of players appearing for both clubs, a list spearheaded by Bayern president Uli Hoeneß, and including the likes of Hansi Dorfner, Norbert Eder, Bertram Beierlorzer and Roland Grahammer.
Former FCB defender Sammy Kuffour spent the 1995-6 season on loan from Bayern to then second division Nürnberg, with the aim of gaining match practice and earning the right to a place in the senior FCB side. The same path has been successfully trodden much more recently, as shown by the examples of Andreas Ottl and Breno last term, and Mehmet Ekici this.
