In the Bundesliga, champions Bayern are in a battle to stay in touch with the leading teams, but last season’s Champions League finalists are in sparkling form in Europe. Following a comfortable 3-0 victory in the final Group E fixture at home to FC Basel, the Bavarians finished on 15 points from their six matches, with 16 goals for and just six against. Both are new records for the club, who easily topped the section.
“Not many teams manage five wins at the group stage, so I think that’s very good,” FCB coach Louis van Gaal commented. “We’d already won the group after five matches, so I’m very satisfied,” continued Van Gaal, although the boss had a message for anyone who thought it had been a stroll: “It looks as though it was easy, but it wasn’t.”
