The calendar year is ending on a slightly curious note at Bayern, as Munich meet the same opponents on the same ground twice in four days. Following the 5-3 win in Sunday’s Bundesliga fixture away to VfB Stuttgart, DFB Cup holders FCB meet VfB again on Wednesday with a place in the last eight at stake. It is by no means the first league/cup double-header in the club’s history, as fcbayern.de discovered on a trawl through the archives.
Since joining the Bundesliga in 1965, Germany’s most successful club has met the same opponents in the league and cup with no other match in between on ten occasions. And in the new millennium, the phenomenon has become almost routine, with four such double-headers in total and three in a row including this Wednesday’s clash.
