The Bayern faithful were already in good spirits at the end of Saturday’s clear-cut 3-0 victory over St. Pauli, but Bastian Schweinsteiger sent the Munich crowd into raptures just a couple of minutes after the final whistle, taking the microphone from announcer Stephan Lehmann and addressing the Allianz Arena south terrace loyalists: “I’ve extended my contract and I’m staying with Bayern until 2016. Long live Bayern!”
The Bavarian native joined FCB in 1998, winning the German U-17 and U-19 championship with Munich and earning his spurs in the reserves before earning a professional contract. Schweinsteiger is a five-time domestic double winner and has appeared in the Champions League final. At the World Cup in South Africa, he matured into one of Germany’s most important players.
