Powerful FCB ahead in the numbers game

The league table never lies, or so the old footballing proverb insists, and at the halfway mark in the 2011/12 campaign, that’s just fine by Bayern. Germany’s biggest club have reached the midpoint of the Bundesliga season three points clear of champions Borussia Dortmund, claiming the so-called ‘autumn championship’ for the 17th time. It is a good omen for Munich, who went on to win the title on 14 of the previous 16 occasions.

A glance at the stats shows that Jupp Heynckes’ side are top of the table on 37 points, and fully deserve to be there too, as Bayern occupy first place in the rankings in a raft of other statistical measures. summarises the key facts and figures from the first half of the Bundesliga campaign.

Most wins and most goals

FCB lead the way in terms of matches won with 12 victories so far. Remarkably, Bayern are the only club in the Bundesliga to go on and win every game in which they have taken the lead. That helps to explain why the Bavarians finished a round of matches at the top of the standings on 13 out of 17 occasions in the first half of term. Overall, FCB have led the league 590 times, a Bundesliga record – of course.

Bayern have scored 43 goals in the first 17 league fixtures, the highest total of all 18 teams. Munich boast the most miserly defence too, with a mere ten goals conceded. The resulting goal difference of +33 is a new record at the midpoint of the season.

Ten clean sheets and counting

The stats for control of the ball also show FCB head and shoulders above the rest, with Munich averaging 67 percent of the possession per match. The men in red are also the league’s most accurate passers, with just 13 percent of their passes failing to reach the intended target. Bastian Schweinsteiger, who was restricted to 12 appearances due to a broken collarbone, played the ball an average of 98 times per game, the top rating in the Bundesliga. Second spot in that respect went to Philipp Lahm (97), whose total of 1,648 touches of the ball is the best score in the league.
