Jupp Heynckes felt it was “a perfect match," Uli Hoeneß described it as “assured and outstanding," and even seasoned Basel striker Alexander Frei spoke of “perfect football". It was not a result anyone had predicted beforehand, but Bayern were in extraordinary form on Tuesday night, dismissing FC Basel 7-0 in the Champions League last sixteen return and booking a place in the quarter-finals for the 11th time in all.
“It was a top performance from the start to the finish," summarised Heynckes after his side's second seven-goal extravaganza in the space of four days, “we showed we had no intention of letting it get out of control today and were utterly determined to make the quarter-finals." Director of sport Christian Nerlinger complimented the players on “a very convincing display and a deserved win."
