In the wake of Mario Gomez’ devastating four-goal display on Tuesday night, English tabloid The Sun couldn't resist one of its famous puns: “Bayern's Mario Goal-mez" trumpeted the mass-market daily, saluting a stunning show from the prolific striker. Mario even managed what German football knows as a “pure" hat-trick, scoring on 50, 61 and 67 minutes with his right foot, his head and his left foot, all in the same half.
The centre-forward had already opened his account for the evening a minute before half-time, and thus became the first German player and only the eighth man ever to score four times in a single Champions League fixture. “Unbelievable, outstanding, and I'm delighted for him," declared team-mate Arjen Robben. Thomas Müller was equally enthusiastic: “He had a magnificent game."
