Augsburg arrived at the Allianz Arena undefeated in six matches, but Bayern ended the minnows’ run with a 2-1 victory, prompting an outbreak of relief in the Munich camp. “I knew it would be tight," said boss Jupp Heynckes. “All credit to the team,” ventured Christian Nerlinger. Two-goal Mario Gomez sought to manage expectations: “We need to get away from this idea that we’ll play every other team off the park."
Reaction to Bayern v Augsburg:
Christian Nerlinger: “It was a tough match and a vital victory. All credit to the team, who were outstanding. Our team is in fantastic shape."
Jupp Heynckes: “I always knew it would be tight, and I believe I've been proved right. Augsburg drew away to Hannover and Bremen, and at home to Dortmund. They’re a very good unit and well organised. We didn't find a way to break them down in the first half, we were hesitant and too slow. We hit the gas after the break. All that matters, during this phase with a game every three days, is winning, and that's what we've done."
