Heynckes: We’d have deserved the win

Three days prior to the Champions League showdown against Real Madrid, visiting Mainz thwarted the home team in a scoreless draw on Saturday, the first time since September 2010 that a match featuring Bayern at the Allianz Arena ended goalless. “We were at a huge disadvantage psychologically,” commented Jupp Heynckes, while Bastian Schweinsteiger rued a string of missed chances: “We should have taken at least one of them.”

Christian Nerlinger: “Regardless of our result, the championship was decided today, so I’m not going to read too much into our result and performance. The players tried hard, but you could see they were hemmed in mentally. Our focus now is on the Champions League and the DFB Cup.”

Jupp Heynckes: “I think this league match against Mainz was always going to be unbelievably difficult to contest. We were at a huge disadvantage psychologically, but we still played intelligent football and we had chances. It's th kind of match you simply have to win 1-0. Any one who’s ever played football will appreciate what it’s like playing every three or four days. We deserved to have won today.“
