The FC Bayern women made history of their own and completed the first half of what could be a remarkable double for the club with a maiden triumph in the DFB Women’s Cup on Saturday afternoon. Coach Thomas Wörle’s team caused a major upset with a 2-0 victory over holders and Women’s Champions League finalists FFC Frankfurt, winning the domestic cup for the first time after losing the 1988 and 1990 finals.
After a goalless first half, the 15,678 crowd at RheinEnergieStadion in Cologne saw US import Sarah Hagen hand FCB the lead on 63 minutes. Late sub Ivana Rudelic sealed the trophy for Munich with a stoppage-time second, completing a fully merited victory thanks to a hard-working team display, stifling their star-studded opponents.
