Don’t read too much into it, chairman cautions

There are still two weeks left until the new Bundesliga season, but the confetti which invariably accompanies a trophy triumph was already raining down at the Allianz Arena on Sunday evening after Bayern sealed the first meaningful prize of term with a 2-1 DFL Supercup victory over champions Borussia Dortmund. FCB have now claimed the cup four times after previous triumphs in 1987, 1990 and 2010.

“Obviously we're happy about winning this trophy," chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said afterwards. The men from Munich had lost their last five meetings with BVB, “so winning again at last is good for the Bavarian soul," Rummenigge continued, although he also sounded a note of caution when asked what it might mean for the new campaign: “Both teams are in good early-season form, but we shouldn't read too much into it."
