FCB face Kaiserslautern in cup second round

Bayern have been handed a manageable home tie against second division Kaiserslautern in the second round of this season’s DFB Cup. In Saturday evening’s draw, made by Germany assistant coach Hansi Flick and actress Sophia Thomalla live on Pay TV, 15-time winners FCB were 15th out of the hat and were awarded welcome home advantage against their old foes from the Palatinate region.

The Red Devils from Kaiserslautern were relegated from the Bundesliga last term and currently lie seventh in division two, with a win and a draw from their two matches so far.

The teams last met a mere three and a half weeks ago, FCB winning a pre-season friendly in Kaiserslautern 3-2. Six years have passed since the pair were matched in the DFB Cup, Bayern running up a narrow second round victory in front of their home crowd courtesy of Andreas Ottl’s solitary goal of the game.

Overall, Bayern and the men from the Palatinate have crossed swords eight times in the knockout cup. The Reds comfortably hold the upper hand over the Red Devils, who finished as winners just once, in the 1980/81 third round.

The second round ties will be played on 30 and 31 October.
