Bayern’s poor luck with injuries in pre-season has continued with the news that Diego Contento has sustained a minor hairline fracture of the left foot. The 22-year-old joins fellow defenders David Alaba (stress fracture) and Rafinha (ankle ligaments) on the club’s injury roster.
As a reaction to the initial diagnosis, Contento sat out Wednesday evening’s friendly in Kaiserslautern as a precaution. After a full medical on Thursday, the player was ordered to rest the foot for the next ten days. A treatment and sports rehab plan will then be developed following a further examination.
The injuries to Alaba and Contento mean two left-backs are currently sidelined with injury. In Wednesday’s game, Jupp Heynckes experimented out of necessity with Luiz Gustavo on the left side of defence, although Philipp Lahm or Xherdan Shaqiri would both also be stand-in candidates for the position. However, with luck Contento could soon be back in action.
