Fast-starting FCB primed for Champions League

Prior to kick-off, the crowd staged a choreographed commemoration of Bayern's maiden German championship triumph, exactly 80 years ago back in 1932. After the composed 3-1 victory over Mainz, the fans hailed the heroes of today. FCB have won all three league matches so far, setting a new club record with a total of 12 goals. Furthermore, it is 12 years since Munich last won the first five competitive matches of a season. “Let it continue. It’s how it must continue," declared captain Philipp Lahm.

“We played some excellent football," observed Jupp Heynckes, as Bayern raced into a match-winning lead in the early stages, Mario Mandzukic and Bastian Schweinsteiger bringing the sell-out Allianz Arena crowd to its feet twice in the first quarter of an hour. Heynckes praised his team's high-paced approach in the first half-hour, “but we were too passive after that," he admonished.
