Bayern successfully overcame the third hurdle of the new Bundesliga season on Saturday. The crowd saw “excellent football” in the first half-hour of the 3-1 home victory over Mainz, boss Jupp Heynckes said. The coach felt his side took too much pace out of the game for a while, but “ultimately deserved to win” after shifting back up through the gears towards the end. “We can be satisfied,“ added Philipp Lahm.
Reaction to Bayern v Mainz:
Jupp Heynckes: “We started very well and played excellent football in the first half-hour. After that we were too passive and let our opponents come at us. Mainz rediscovered their belief and put up plenty of resistance. But we took control again after conceding the goal, we created plenty of chances, and we ultimately deserved to win.“
