Bayern will play their first match after the international break on a brand new pitch, currently being readied at the Allianz Arena for Saturday’s home meeting with FSV Mainz 05. Work on the replacement playing surface began on Monday morning and is scheduled for completion by Wednesday night.
The first stage of the operation, the removal of the current turf from the Allianz Arena, began at 10 am on Monday morning. The old pitch will be completely gone by the evening, when the next stage is to prepare the undersoil for the new surface. The initial batch of rolled turf, cultivated in the Lower Rhine region of Germany by a specialist grower, will be delivered to the stadium on Tuesday morning. The physical laying of the 8,000 square metre grass surface will last through to the evening of the following day. The new pitch is designed to be ready for immediate use.
Frequent heavy rain over the stadium in recent months, and the fact the pitch is used at least once a week for matches involving Bayern and TSV 1860 München, has necessitated the latest replacement program in advance of the busy autumn and winter months, which include a large number of midweek as well as weekend games. Overall, it is the tenth new pitch to be laid at the Allianz Arena in the stadium’s eighth year of operation.
