Mean defence, potent attack, ‘almost unsinkable’

No-one at Bayern has forgotten the miracle of Turin, a remarkable and momentous 4-1 victory away to Juventus in December 2009 which sealed Munich's last-gasp qualification for the Champions League Round of 16. The result sparked FCB's season into life, and would take the club as far as the Champions League final. For Juve, it marked the end of their European campaign.

Fast forward three seasons, and Italy's most successful club are back in Europe's elite competition for the first time. Friday's quarter-final draw has now thrown up a rematch with FCB. “It wasn't easy back then, and Juventus have continued to improve," warned Bastian Schweinsteiger. The Bayern vice-captain appeared in all six previous meetings between the clubs, with two wins, three defeats and a draw from a Munich point of view. “They've always been very tough matches," he said.
