A 20-point cushion at the top of the Bundesliga and an unstoppable march on the title was exactly the dream cherished by Thomas Müller last summer. Now, with nine games still remaining, that is exactly the margin by which Bayern lead Borussia Dortmund. With FCB also through to the DFB Cup semi-finals, it’s hard to imagine the club being in better shape prior to Wednesday's home meeting with Arsenal.
“The idea of marching clear at the top is something you contemplate at every training camp," said Müller, reflecting on the pre-season period in the summer of 2012. The fact that the dream has become reality is in no small measure due to the Germany international’s excellence this term. The FCB youth product has made 32 appearances this season and has had a hand in 28 goals, scoring 17 and laying on another 11. In fact, he is already six goals ahead of his total for last season. His most recent strike was a crucial equaliser against Düsseldorf on the stroke of half-time last Saturday.
