Despite clinching a 23rd German league title last weekend, Bayern are still hungry this season and aim to claim the DFB Cup and the Champions League, where Wolfsburg and Barcelona provide the semi-final opposition. But before that, Jupp Heynckes’ men have an important task in the 186th all–Bavaria derby at home to FC Nürnberg on Saturday (Live in English from 3.30 pm CET on FCB.tv Web Radio).
“It's another sell-out crowd tomorrow, and the fans who come expect us to turn in a performance," said FCB coach Heynckes on Friday prior to team training at the Säbener Strasse facility. Unsurprisingly, the plum European tie against Barcelona dominated the day, but board member for sport Matthias Sammer backed the coach all the way.
“The Barcelona matches are such a long way off," remarked Sammer, “we have a league fixture at the weekend. Our supporters are looking forward to it because we're playing at home as champions. That's why we're up for it." As a result, the newly-crowned Bundesliga winners “will prepare as if we still desperately needed the points. There will be no let up because we have to maintain our rhythm," stated Heynckes.
