Many people wondered why Bayern chose to bring in Mario Mandzukic from VfL Wolfsburg last summer, but the Croat’s record speaks for itself: he has 22 goals in 39 games for FCB, including the vital opener against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final last Saturday. “Basically, I'm only just now beginning to realise what we've achieved," the player told fcbayern.de at Munich airport on Friday morning.
One of Mandzu's childhood dreams came true in London last weekend, but he is not sated yet and is determined to succeed in his first German cup final. “We know we can make history," said the 27-year-old, “I'm ready, I'm fit, I'm fired up and on Saturday, I'll extract everything, and I mean everything, out of my body one more time." As an added bonus, Mandzukic also pledged he would be going for goal in a red shirt again next season.
Interview: Mario Mandzukic
fcbayern.de: Mario, if you'd been told a year or so ago that you'd join Bayern and win the treble in your first season, what would you have said?
Mario Mandzukic: Probably the first thing I'd have done is laugh. But after the first few training sessions with the team, I sensed it was a very special group with unbelievable quality. So it's actually no surprise to me that we're close to the treble.
