In 2010, Inter Milan became the sixth club to claim the treble, that rare combination of the domestic double and the European champions’ cup. Prior to that, it had been achieved only by Barcelona (2009), Manchester United (1999), PSV Eindhoven (1988), Ajax Amsterdam (1972) and Celtic (1967). Bayern can join that elite group on Saturday if they win the DFB Cup – and the players are well aware of that fact. “We’re all hungry, we want to go down as immortal, we want to win the treble!” stated Thomas Müller.
No German club has ever achieved the triple triumph, and that fact alone would be “a huge motivating factor” for the meeting with VfB Stuttgart. The prestige on offer would make it easier for the players to rise to the cup challenge despite the triumphs in the Champions League and the Bundesliga, opined Müller: “The cup has gained in importance, because the prize on offer is more than just the cup – we can make history!”
