Not one Bayern fan or player really wanted to leave Berlin Olympic Stadium on Saturday night, as they sang, danced and chanted. Bastian Schweinsteiger grabbed a megaphone, the team started a conga, Jupp Heynckes was hoisted high. Everyone knew history had been made. Everyone knew they were celebrating a potentially unique achievement in the story of German football. All hail treble-winning Bayern!
“Franz Beckenbauer and Günter Netzer are here, and they won everything. But no-one's won the treble before," Karl-Heinz Rummenigge proudly declared at the post-match banquet, hosted by Deutsche Telekom in the German capital. FCB defeated VfB Stuttgart 3-2 in the DFB Cup final, “and I want to say thanks," the chairman continued, “what we've achieved probably hasn't completely sunk in yet."
