When Bayern finally laid hands on Europe's most prestigious trophy on 25 May, Munich was not the only place to celebrate. The people in Provincia Autonoma di Trento could also feel pride and passion for the Champions League and eventual treble winners, because the foundations for a stunning season were laid in Trentino last summer. And the continent’s best club are heading back to northern Italy for their summer training camp again this year when Trentino hosts the senior squad from 4 to 12 July.
Conditions at the Riva del Garda base are widely acknowledged as ideal. “We have a superb hotel, superb food, a superb training facility and lots of peace and quiet," board director for sport Matthias Sammer remarked last summer. The training camp by the shores of Lake Garda met with nothing but approval from the players either: “You have to feel good about being here," Tom Starke said on behalf of his team-mates.
Two friendlies in Trentino
The treble winners will contest two friendly matches during their stay in the North Italian province, the Paulaner Cup against a Fan XI at 6.30 pm on 5 July, and a rather more serious warm-up against new boss Pep Guardiola's former club Brescia Calcio on 9 July. After what is bound to be a perfect period of pre-season preparation, the squad departs for home on 12 July.
As in previous years, Bayern's junior team youth section will also spend part of the pre-season period in Trentino. The first squad to arrive will be the second team, who are due on 30 June in Molveno, where the centre of the village and the road to the training ground will be decorated in red and white. A month or so later, from 28 July until 4 August, the U-19 squad take up station in Fierro di Primiero, with the U-17 moving into a base in Trento. Finally, from 10 until 16 August, the FCB U-15 will train in Valle di Ledro, and the U-14 in Valsugana. Trentino will also play host to a series of football camps for kids and youths this summer.
