The first thing Pep Guardiola did before training on Thursday was to congratulate delighted new papa Toni Kroos, whose first son Leon was born a couple of days ago. The head coach, himself a father of three, took the midfielder to one side for a warm embrace and a brief chat among dads. After that, Guardiola asked his international players how they were doing – and the good news was that none had picked up an injury.

And one particular player returned to Munich on the crest of a wave, because Xherdan Shaqiri and his Swiss team-mates recorded a stunning victory over five-time World Cup winners Brazil the previous evening. To make things even better for Shaq, the game took place on his old stamping ground of Basel. Speaking to, the midfielder was still in high spirits, speaking of a “sensation. We deservedly won with a team performance." Guardiola himself is most impressed by the Swiss, as Shaqiri revealed: “He said we have a superb group, and we might even be an outside bet for the World Cup."

Trio still on their travels

But very soon, the FCB stars turned their attention to a more immediate task. Guardiola took charge of a near full-strength squad as Bayern began preparations for Saturday's trip to Eintracht Frankfurt. Three players were absent due to international commitments in far-flung locations, with Javi Martinez, Thiago and Claudio Pizarro still making their way home. The Spanish pair both featured in a 2-0 victory in Ecuador, while Pizza captained Peru to a creditable goalless draw with South Korea. Looking ahead to Saturday, Bayern are aiming to join forces again and celebrate another three points.
