In an injury blow to treble winners Bayern, summer signing Thiago will be out of action for seven weeks with ligament damage to his right ankle sustained in Saturday’s 2-0 Bundesliga victory over Nürnberg. The diagnosis was issued on Sunday by FCB chief medical officer Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt, and the player will undergo surgery on Monday.
The 22-year-old collected the injury, a rupture of the syndesmotic ligaments which stabilise the ankle in the articulation between the fibula and tibia, in a challenge midway through the second half of the Allianz Arena clash and was replaced by Thomas Müller shortly afterwards. Thiago is definitely out of Bayern’s Bundesliga matches against Freiburg, Hannover, Schalke and VfL Wolfsburg, the first one or two Champions League group stage fixtures, the DFB Cup second round meeting with Hannover, and Friday’s UEFA Super Cup final against Chelsea.
