Sixteen-time DFB Cup winners and current holders Bayern have been handed a tricky but manageable task in the last sixteen of this season's competition with an away tie against in-form Bundesliga rivals and Bavarian neighbours FC Augsburg. In a curious twist, the clash is an exact repeat of last season, when the teams also met at the SGL Arena in the third round.
In that match at the same stage of last season's competition, FCA made life very difficult for eventual cup winners FCB, although Mario Gomez and Xherdan Shaqiri scored the goals to seal an ultimately deserved victory and a berth in the quarter-finals. Bayern and Augsburg had previously met in the cup on one occasion, in the second round back in 1983. The men from Munich cruised to a 6-0 success, with current chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge among the scorers on the day.
Overall, the history of the fixture falls heavily in favour of Bayern, as the men from the state capital have won all eight previous meetings with FC Augsburg in the Bundesliga, the cup and the now superseded regional league. The first of this season’s two Bundesliga clashes between the Bavarian neighbours takes place in Munich on 9 November.
The draw for the third round of the domestic knockout cup was made live on national TV on Sunday evening by Germany national coach Jochaim Löw and DFB General Secretary Helmut Sandrock. The schedule for the last sixteen ties, to be played on Tuesday and Wednesday 3 and 4 December, will be finalised shortly.

Eintracht Frankfurt v SV Sandhausen
Union Berlin v FC Kaiserslautern
Schalke 04 v TSG Hoffenheim
Saarbrücken v Borussia Dortmund
