Two Bayern stars were in action for their countries on Saturday evening local time. The pair came away with two victories, a goal and a prestigious honour.
Perfect match for Dante
A 71,124 crowd in Miami watched World Cup hosts Brazil take on Honduras, who are also through to next summer’s finals. A Selecao cruised to an comprehensive 5–0 victory, with Bayern defender Dante adding his name to the scoresheet. The centre back made the score 2–0 after 55 minutes, forcing home a loose ball following a free-kick. It means Dante has doubled his tally for his country and is now up to two goals.
Bernard (22) opened the scoring for the Brazilians in the first half. After Dante’s goal, Maicon (66), Willian (70) and Hulk (74) also hit the target for the World Cup favourites. Dante played the full 90 minutes and also finished with more to celebrate than merely the emphatic victory: after his central defensive partner David Luiz was substituted, the Bayern man took the Brazil armband in the 72nd minute.
Win for Martínez
Javi Martínez and Spain defeated Equatorial Guinea 2–1. Santi Cazorla (14) and Juanfran (42) scored for the world champions in the exhibition match in Africa. Jimmy Bermudez (37) hit the target for the home team. Martínez started the match in central defence and played through to the 80th minute.
