Some six months after the event, Bayern’s historic treble continues to resonate and draw recognition. In a ceremony at Berlin’s Comic Opera (Komische Oper) on Thursday evening, GQ Magazine awarded the Munich stars the prestigious title of “Men of the Year”. Representing the entire squad, injured duo Claudio Pizarro and Xherdan Shaqiri accepted the award in the “sports” category. The citation was read by former ice skating icon Katarina Witt.
“This is a unique experience for us,” declared Shaqiri. “It’s a great moment at this impressive event,” he continued. The evening culminated in the presentation of the GQ awards. “Obviously winning the prize has made the evening even better,” continued Shaqiri, although he lamented the fact “the whole team can’t be here.”
For the 15th time, lifestyle publication GQ Gentlemen's Quarterly recognised personalities from Germany and abroad. The other prize winners included former pro David Beckham (in the “style” category), French designer Jean-Paul Gaultier (“fashion”), US singer Robin Thicke (“music”) and actor Götz George (“legends”). Alongside the mainly male prize winners, Australian pop icon Kylie Minogue received an award as “Gentlewoman of the Year”.
The two Bayern stars left before the after-show party, as they flew back to Munich on the same evening ready to continue sports rehabilitation programmes the following day. “But it was a wonderful evening,” confirmed Shaqiri. FCB partners s.Oliver (co-hosts) and Tomas Sabo were also represented in Berlin.
