The year 2013 was a magnificent one for Bayern, and 2014 has begun with more good news. On Saturday, the day before the squad reports for mid-season training, the FIFA club world champions confirmed the signing of striker Robert Lewandowski. Shortly after the formalities were completed, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge spoke to FCB.tv. fcbayern.de summarises the statements made by the club chairman.
Karl-Heinz Rummenigge on...
...the signing of Robert Lewandowski: “It’s gone wonderfully well. He signed at the Säbener Strasse [club headquarters] this evening. We’re delighted he’s chosen to join Bayern Munich. He’ll strengthen FC Bayern as of 1 July.”
...Mario Mandzukic: “We’re very pleased with Mario. He made a significant contribution to us winning so many trophies last year. I just like to recall his goal at Wembley in London... he’s a magnificent player who has come on superbly at Bayern. He has a contract with us until 30 June 2016, and I told his agent in Marrakech that we’re certainly prepared to consider extending his contract well before it expires. We have absolutely no intention of letting Mario go.”
...rumours surrounding Chelsea defender David Luiz: “There’s a lot of speculation at the moment and it’s an extreme situation in England. We’re being linked with David Luiz and other Spanish players at the present time. Let me state this very clearly: it’s all of no interest whatsoever to us. We’re not yet concerned about the situation regarding the playing staff next summer. There’s nothing lined up, so we have nothing to hide. It’s simply not on the table. What I’d personally like is for Holger Badstuber to make a comeback. He would be a newcomer who would be an excellent fit at Bayern. He’s a wonderful lad and an important player for us.”
...the forthcoming training camp in Doha: “The coach will have the best possible conditions in Doha. Hopefully the weather will be good so the team can actually enjoy the training camp even though it’ll definitely be very demanding.“
...the Bundesliga restart: “We have two difficult away games right at the start, in Mönchengladbach and in Stuttgart the following Wednesday. We have to be prepared for that. We’ll have to be extremely focused right from the start, so we take the points we need to retain the title.“
