ECA: Financial Fair Play is a chance for all

Sixteen Bayern pros are currently on international duty. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge was also away on business at the start of the week. The club chairman attended the 12th AGM of the European Club Association (ECA) in Barcelona. Rummenigge chaired the meeting of the body representing the interests of 214 European football clubs.

The key issues at the two-day event included Financial Fair Play. “A lot of time and effort has been invested in this project. We can’t afford to be casual about it,” said Rummenigge in his opening address. “Financial Fair Play is not a punishment - it’s a chance for all of us.” The FCB chairman therefore hopes UEFA will ensure that “Financial Fair Play is rigorously implemented.”

Other subjects under discussion included the ECA-commissioned study on the current transfer system in Europe, the distribution of prize money from UEFA competitions and the recently introduced UEFA Youth League, which has met with the approval of the clubs involved. Peter Lawwell, chief executive of Celtic, was voted onto the ECA board.
