In a high-quality and always absorbing match on Saturday afternoon VfL Wolfsburg matched mighty Bayern for 60 minutes in a closely-fought contest, but the runaway league leaders then produced a blistering 18-minute onslaught yielding five goals and eventually won it 6-1, Munich’s 22nd victory in 24 league matches. “We weren’t as dominant as in recent matches. But at the end of the day it was us who scored the goals,” commented Bayern coach Pep Guardiola after the match in front of a sell-out crowd at the Volkswagen Arena.
Reaction to Wolfsburg v Bayern
Pep Guardiola: “We weren’t as dominant as in recent matches. Wolfsburg were superbly organised and very aggressive. We had a problem with that in the first half and they were better than us for the first 15 minutes after half-time. But at the end of the day it was us who scored the goals.“
Dieter Hecking (VfL Wolfsburg coach): “I think we were outstanding for 65 minutes. We had Bayern reeling. But after they made it 3-1 it was as if we suffered a power cut. All our passion and determined running was gone. My players suddenly realised just how superior our opponents were. We showed huge heart but it wasn’t enough. Having to explain why it finished 6-1 is tough to digest.“
