“Allez les bleus,” shouted Hermann Gerland across the training ground as Franck Ribéry emerged from the dressing room. Europe’s Footballer of the Year, back in Munich since Monday, smiled mischievously before joining Holger Broich on the neighbouring pitch. The Frenchman went on to complete a strenuous fitness session.
“I feel good,” said Ribéry in an interview with fcbayern.de on his first day back from holiday, “I’m happy to be back.” The France international, who missed the World Cup due to a back problem, has been busy over the summer. Ribéry spent a week working with rehab coach Thomas Wilhelmi and physio Helmut Erhard. “Thanks to both of them and to FC Bayern. It was really well organised. We had a very good time and that was very important to me.”
Ribéry also joined in celebrating with his fellow FCB men who won the World Cup in Brazil. “I’m so, so happy for my team-mates, for the whole Germany team and for all the people involved,” said the Frenchman. “The moment Philipp lifted the trophy in the air was brilliant!” The Germany players from FCB at Brazil 2014 and Ribéry kept in close contact with each other during the tournament: “We sent a lot of text messages,” the 31-year-old revealed.
While the World Cup heroes enjoy a well-earned break, Ribéry will be working hard on his comeback, on an individual basis at first. The French wizard on the wings is hoping to be back in full training soon. “I’m doing well,” declared Ribéry who now aims to “train a lot and have a good pre-season with the team.” Franck is already looking forward to the new campaign: “We’re ready for a good season.”
