Bayern slipped to defeat in the first competitive fixture of the 2014/15 season when last term’s double winners fell 2-0 to Borussia Dortmund in the final of the German Supercup, although the scoreline was less painful than a potentially serious injury to Javi Martínez, who was stretchered off in the first half. “I think he’ll be out for a long time,” a downcast Bayern boss Pep Guardiola said afterwards.
Reaction to the Supercup final
Pep Guardiola: “Congratulations to Jürgen Klopp and his team. We played well in the first 15 minutes but we had a few problems after that. We dropped too deep in the second half. We still need time. The worst news is the serious injury sustained by Javi Martínez, because he was in good form. We’ll find out how bad it is on Thursday, but I think he’ll be out for a long time.”
Philipp Lahm: “We have a lot of players who’ve only just resumed training, so it’s completely normal that we need more time and that’s why it wasn’t easy today. We had a good chance right at the start. We’re right in the thick of pre-season and you always need a couple of games before you’re back at 100 percent.”
Robert Lewandowski: “It was the first match and pre-season has been tough. We wanted to win but BVB played the better football today. We need to turn our focus to the next match, the cup tie, and I think it’ll be a great deal better. I hope Javi’s injury isn’t serious.”
Jürgen Klopp (Borussia Dortmund coach): “Given the stage we’re at, that was a fantastic performance. We defended really, really well as a team and Bayern didn’t make a lot of chances. We were very tricky opponents today. Neither team was at anything like full strength, and both were tired after a certain point in the match. But the prize on offer today was the Supercup, and we’ve deservedly won it.”
