'The win is good for us mentally'

After Bayern’s successful start to the new Bundesliga season, coach Pep Guardiola declared himself “very, very pleased" with the 2–1 victory over VfL Wolfsburg. The Spaniard was very satisfied with his newly-formed team’s battling attitude: “The win is good for us mentally.” Arjen Robben, who scored his side's crucial second, placed the game in its proper context: “You just have to see a game like that through to the end and take the three points.”

Reaction to Bayern v Wolfsburg

Pep Guardiola:”Winning is the most important thing to every coach in the world. Overall I'm very, very pleased. We battled away well. Wolfsburg were better in the second half. Let's not forget we played one of the best teams in the league. The win is good for us mentally.”

Arjen Robben:”A first match like that is always a bit odd, especially because pre-season was far from ideal. You just have to see a game like that through to the end and take the three points, and that's what we've done. We were very composed in the first half, but after we went two goals up I guess we thought we'd done the job. We shouldn't be running into trouble in that situation. We let them have far too many chances in the second half.”

Thomas Müller: ”We played spells of really good football, but it's never perfect at the start of the season. You have to grit your teeth and put in a shift. Malanda’s huge chance sparked us into a response and pulled us together. We're not only capable of good football, we can fight too.”

Holger Badstuber: ”Obviously I was very emotional about playing at home in front of our fans after such a long time out. It's terrific, especially because we ended up winning. It rates as a perfect day for me.”

Juan Bernat: ”It was important to start with a win. It was a good game, although we struggled a little at times. Bayern are one of the best teams in the world and it's a privilege to be here.”

Dieter Hecking (VfL Wolfsburg coach): ”We controlled the play at the start and contained them, but then we were too passive. Bayern shifted up a gear and punished us, but we were very good after pulling one back. Both sides went for it and it was a spectacular match. The simple difference was Bayern’s determination, and they deserved the win based on the number of chances.”

Ivica Olic (VfL Wolfsburg): ”We started well, but dropped too deep in the last 15 minutes of the first half and let Bayern play their football. It was obviously tough after we went two goals down, but we fought back and had some good moments.”

Max Grün (VfL Wolfsburg): ”We showed great resolve after they went two up so all credit to the team. We’d have deserved an equaliser based on the second half. Bayern obviously had chances on the break at the end because we threw everyone forward, but if you consider the chances that went before we should have scored a second goal.”
