From a sporting point of view Bayern enjoyed a highly successful Champions League evening on Wednesday as the 2-0 win over Roma ensured the Reds’ victory in Group E, but there was a downside to the game as well when David Alaba limped off injured with nine minutes to go. According to an initial diagnosis issued just before midnight the utility man had injured the ligaments in his right knee. That opinion was confirmed on Thursday afternoon.
After a lengthy and exhaustive examination at Dr Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt’s practice and consultation with other specialist doctors, the FCB chief medical officer confirmed his diagnosis of a partial tear of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) and damage to the medial meniscus. Alaba will require surgery and faces several weeks on the sidelines.
‘A bitter blow’
“This feels like a bitter blow for me at the moment,” the Austrian international told fcbayern.de, “it’s been going so well for me and the team. Once I’ve had the operation, I’ll start a sports rehab programme as soon as the doc allows it. Hopefully, with the help of our medical unit, I’ll soon be back out on the pitch.”
Shortly after the Roma clash, in which Alaba provided the assist for the crucial opening goal, Pep Guardiola expressed dismay about the 22-year-old’s injury: “This is very bad news. We’re losing a top player who can fill every position and always gives it 100 percent. It’s a real shame.”
