Regardless of the outcome when second-placed Wolfsburg entertain FC Köln on Saturday evening, FC Bayern are guaranteed to spend the winter break holding the biggest lead at the midpoint of a Bundesliga season in top flight history. The champions’ advantage over the Wolves will be a minimum of 11 and a maximum of 14 points after 17 of the 34 matches. The previous midpoint record was a ten-point lead, set by Bayern last season and Dortmund in 2010/11. FCB’s total of 45 points midway through the campaign is also the second-best ever haul at this stage, bettered only by Bayern’s own 47 points from last term.
One record equalled, one record set
Bayern conceded a goal for the first time in six Bundesliga matches in the 2-1 win at Mainz on Friday, but the Reds still set one new record and equalled another in the final match of 2014. FCB have the best-ever defence after 17 matches with four goals against; the previous record of seven conceded was set by Bayern in 2012/13 and Stuttgart in 2003/04. And Pep Guardiola’s men equalled the best goal difference of +37 at the midpoint, shared with the 2012/13 FCB team.
Farewell for now, World Champions Badge
The FIFA World Champions Badge has featured prominently on the famous Bayern kit for a year, but Friday’s Bundesliga clash in Mainz was the last time – at least for now – that Germany’s most successful club will wear the prestigious emblem. The honour of wearing the badge for the next year will pass on Saturday to the winners of the 2014 Club World Cup final in Marrakech, Morocco, between Real Madrid and Argentine cracks San Lorenzo.
