Shortly before 10 am on Friday morning the Bayern players and coaching staff set off for the annual winter training camp, to be staged again this year in Qatar. A total of 26 players boarded the Lufthansa charter jet which landed in Doha in the late afternoon after an uneventful five-hour flight.
The only members of the first team squad not on board were long-term injury absentees Philipp Lahm and Thiago. By contrast Javi Martínez was among the group travelling to the Emirate and will continue his sports rehab programme after a cruciate ligament injury. Two talented U-19 youngsters, Michael Eberwein and Marco Hingerl, are also making the trip.
“Conditions there are superb,” Jérôme Boateng commented at Munich airport prior to departure, “we’re all delighted to be getting going. We want to lay the foundations for success in the second half of the season.” Team-mate Sebastian Rode is looking forward to the warm temperatures. “It makes training twice as much fun.”
Sporting director Matthias Sammer called for focus and hard labour: “The restart fixture in Wolfsburg won’t be easy, so we need to prepare well and focus on our work.” Sammer feels the Aspire Academy is perfect for Bayern’s needs: “The pitches there are in fantastic condition.”
As always, fcbayern.de will report exclusively form the training camp on a daily basis!
