In their third match since the winter break, FC Bayern registered a first win of the second half of the season as Pep Guardiola’s team worked hard for a 2-0 success in the south German derby away to VfB Stuttgart. “It was time we took three points,” said Arjen Robben, who set FCB on their way with the opening goal just before half-time. “Arjen Robben and David Alaba’s quality was the big difference today,” said Guardiola. “We need to improve and recover our previous level.”
Reaction to Stuttgart v Bayern
Pep Guardiola: “It was tough and we weren’t on top of our game. Arjen Robben and David Alaba’s quality was the big difference today. The result was important as we prepare to face Hamburg and Donetsk but we need to improve and recover our previous level. I have great faith in this team.”
Arjen Robben: “Stuttgart pulled everyone back and defended so it was important to score just before half-time. It put us in a good position and made the second half a bit easier. It was time we took three points, that was very important to us today. Stuttgart were very defensive and used their wingers as full-backs. You have to go in search of the gaps. The magic moment always comes, we always make chances – but you have to take your chances. We scored from our first chance today and that’s what you need in a game like that.”
Huub Stevens (VfB Stuttgart coach): “I can be satisfied with my players’ attitude. I have no criticism of my lads. The team battled away, so we shouldn’t let our heads go down, we need to keep going just like that.”
Christian Gentner (VfB Stuttgart captain): “Our plan worked well for the first 40 minutes, but then we lost concentration for an instant, and Bayern have too many good individuals for that. After their second they were never going to let us back into it.”
