David Alaba and Austria have consolidated their position at the top of EURO 2016 qualifying Group G. The team coached by Marcel Koller, who last featured at a major tournament for which they had to qualify back in 1998, comfortably defeated minnows Liechtenstein 5-0 on Friday and remain four points clear of Sweden, 2-0 winners away to Moldova thanks to a brace from PSG star Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Alongside Martin Harnik (14), Marc Janko (16), Zlatko Junuzovic (74) and Marko Arnautovic (90+3), Alaba also added his name to the scoresheet in Vienna. The 21-year-old, who played in midfield as usual for his national team, netted his team’s third goal on the hour – making amends for a 33rd-minute miss from the penalty spot.
Three points for Bernat
It was also a successful evening for Juan Bernat, who took over from Barcelona left-back Jordi Alba after 78 minutes of Spain’s crucial 1-0 victory over Ukraine on Friday. The match-winning goal for the reigning European champions was scored by Juventus striker Alvaro Morata after 28 minutes. The Spanish now have 12 points and lie second in their section after Slovakia, who made it five wins in five matches with a 3-0 success against Luxembourg.
