The FC Bayern Women have preserved their unbeaten run in the Allianz Bundesliga this season and remain well on course to qualify for the UEFA Champions League after coach Thomas Wörle’s team beat Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 at home in Sunday’s 16th round of matches. A rapid-fire double from Melanie Behringer (11, pen) and Vivianne Miedema (16) saw the home side comfortably in front at half time, and although Leverkusen applied pressure in the second period, FCB held on for the win. Behringer and Co remain second in the standings on 40 points, two off champions VfL Wolfsburg.
Hannover’s Stindl banned
Hannover 96 will be without captain Lars Stindl in next Saturday’s Bundesliga meeting with FC Bayern. The midfielder was dismissed for a second yellow card offence shortly before the end of his team’s 1-1 draw with VfB Stuttgart at the weekend and is automatically suspended for the next match.
Donetsk back to winning ways
Ukrainian champions Shakhtar Donetsk have returned to domestic league action with a win. In the first round of matches after a winter break lasting almost three months, Bayern’s Champions League opponents beat Vorskla Poltava 3-0 to remain in hot pursuit of leaders Dynamo Kyiv. An 8,200 crowd at Arena Lviv saw Vyacheslav Shevchuk (26), Douglas Costa (49) and Alex Teixeira (69) score for coach Mircea Lucescu’s team, who played the last half-hour with ten men after a 60th-minute red card for Ivan Ordets.
