FC Bayern were boosted on Sunday by Bastian Schweinsteiger’s return to the team training programme. Two days ahead of the Champions League last eight return against Porto the FCB vice-captain worked out with the squad after a two-week lay-off with an ankle problem and a virus. It was only a small group for the session at the Säbener Strasse, as Schweinsteiger was joined by Claudio Pizarro, Manuel Neuer, Pepe Reina and FCB II keeper Ivan Lucic for a gentle workout including a game of football tennis. On the day after the 2-0 victory over Hoffenheim, the rest of the players performed regeneration exercise in the performance center.
Atkinson appointed referee
The match officials for Tuesday’s return against Porto are from England. Martin Atkinson, a 44-year-old policeman, has been named referee – and Germany’s biggest club have only good memories of the Premier League official. In October 2010 Atkinson refereed a 3-2 home win against Cluj, before taking charge of a 1-0 success at Lille in October 2012.
