Unbeaten at home to Portuguese sides

FC Bayern face a Portuguese team at a knockout stage in UEFA competitions for the ninth time. All the previous eight ties ended with the Reds going through to the next round. FCB have an impressive home record against teams from Portugal, winning eight of ten games (including group stage matches) to date and drawing the other two.

Porto yet to win in Munich

FC Porto have a poor record away to German teams. The Portuguese runners-up have played against German clubs 15 times clocking up three wins, five draws and seven defeats along the way. Porto have played at FC Bayern twice before: in the European Cup quarter finals in 1991 (1-1) and the Champions League quarter-finals in 2000 (2-1 to Bayern).

FCB only through once

The 3-1 defeat at Porto was the eleventh time FC Bayern have lost the first leg of a European knockout tie by more than one goal. FCB have only once before recovered from that deficit in the return leg to progress to the next round: The UEFA Cup Round of 16 in the 1988/89 season saw a 2-0 reverse against Inter Milan in Munich turned round with a 3-1 victory in Milan. FC Bayern have not yet managed that trick at home. Will it change on Tuesday night?

FCB 8 Porto 1

If FC Bayern reach the Champions League semi-finals it will be the ninth time FCB have been in the last four of Europe’s premier club competition. It would also be the fourth time in succession for FCB; only Barcelona have achieved that more often (six times). FC Porto have only made it to the last four of the Champions League once in four attempts: In 2003/04 Porto knocked out Olympique Lyon on the way to winning the final against AS Monaco. That match was played in Germany.

Porto knocked out once

Porto go into the second leg of a knockout round in a UEFA competition more than one goal up for the 32nd time. Porto have only been knocked out once under those circumstances, over 34 years ago in the Round of 32 in the UEFA Cup. The last 24 European clashes on the back of a first leg winning margin of more than one goal have always seen FC Porto go through.

Four Bayern players on yellow cards

Four FC Bayern players on yellow cards run the risk of missing the Champions League semi-finals. If FC Bayern manage to beat FC Porto in Tuesday night’s second leg and one of Jérôme Boateng, Philipp Lahm, Manuel Neuer or Juan Bernat pick up a booking then they will be watching from the stands in the first semi-final game. As in the European Championships, all yellow cards are discounted after the quarter-finals. That means bookings are not carried over into the last four ties. This rule was introduced for the first time this season.
