'The team spirit is fantastic'

The Bayern board has now joined the squad in Porto. Before Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and his fellow directors flew to the north of Portugal on Tuesday morning, the chairman spoke about the current situation at the club on the eve of the Champions League quarter-final first leg away to FC Porto. fcbayern.de listened in.

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge on...

...his gut feeling prior to the match: “We have a very tough game tomorrow evening. We’ll be focused and we have great respect. We know we can’t underestimate these opponents. Let’s not forget that Porto have yet to lose in the Champions League this season. I hope we can come away with a good result. We’ll need it if we’re to make the next round.”

...the long injury list at Bayern: “Unfortunately we have an incredibly large number of injuries. We only have 13 or 14 fit players, the rest are youngsters, some of whom haven’t played professionally yet. Obviously it’s not entirely easy for the coach. But he’s doing a superb job. And the team are doing magnificent work too. The team spirit is fantastic. They’re generating amazing power from this incredible team spirit. It’s a really important factor.”

...Pep Guardiola: “The coach is the key to everything. He doesn’t just have a plan A, B or C, he has the whole alphabet from top to bottom. At the moment I don’t think opposing coaches know what tactics Pep Guardiola is going to use. Actually, when I go to the stadium, I sometimes don’t know either. Time and time again, I’m totally captivated and positively surprised at all the things that occur to him.”
