The FC Bayern squad that got back to work on the training ground at the start of the new week included four international players who returned early from national team duty. For the afternoon workout, the first official session at the club after a three-day break, Pep Guardiola welcomed world champions Manuel Neuer and Jérôme Boateng, plus Arjen Robben and Robert Lewandowski. Neuer and Lewandowski joined their team-mates for the squad drills, with Boateng and Robben pursuing individual programmes in the performance centre.
Rode resumes team training
It was a good day for Sebastian Rode too, as the 25-year-old is now sufficiently recovered from an inflamed tendon to resume parts of the squad programme. Rode started working on the ball last Friday and has now taken the next step on the road back to full fitness.
Seasoned star Müller
Bayern’s Thomas Müller is the most experienced member of the Germany squad for the friendly against the Netherlands in Hannover on Tuesday evening. Müller has 68 senior caps to his name, followed by former Munich goal-getter Mario Gomez on 61 caps. Müller is also the top striker in the squad with 31 international goals, again followed by Gomez on 25.
Benatia through despite defeat
Morocco are through to the group stages of African qualifying for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Following a 2-0 victory over Equatorial Guinea in the second preliminary round, a 1-0 defeat in Sunday’s return was enough for the national team led by FCB defender Mehdi Benatia to progress to the next stage. Starting in October next year, 20 nations play in five groups to determine Africa’s five representatives at the 2018 tournament.
