FC Bayern brought up a century of home matches in Europe’s elite club competition with another fully convincing display, a 4-0 win against Greek champions Olympiacos that saw the Reds through to the last sixteen as Group F winners. “Winning the group was the team’s main target. It’s what we’ve pursued from match to match,” said Jérôme Boateng. Pep Guardiola was very pleased afterwards: “The Champions League is now done and dusted until February.”
Reaction to FCB v Olympiacos
Pep Guardiola: “I’m very pleased about qualifying. Huge credit to all my players. We wanted to win the group and we’ve finished first. We’ve scored plenty of goals at home again so I’m satisfied. We weren’t perfect in possession, but we were very good without the ball. The players have great character. The Champions League is now done and dusted until February.”
Philipp Lahm: “We can be pleased. It’s always important to finish first, because you have the advantage of playing the last sixteen return at home. It’s a good way to round off the year. There’s still one game to go, but it’s good to have it all sorted beforehand. If you’re a man down, it’s easier when you’re in front. We have the players who can play the football to bring it safely home.”
Jérôme Boateng: “It was a good team performance right from the start. We created lots of chances, especially in the first half. Winning the group was the team’s main target. It’s what we’ve pursued from match to match. We’ve shown we’re top of the group by rights."
Thomas Müller: “We have to keep it up. We have to continue on our course as a team. It’s what’s expected, from us and the fans. But the road ahead is still tough. We want to win the thing. Obviously, that’s not exactly a given, as there are a few teams with the same target. It’ll be much tighter once we get to the quarters and semis, but we’re well on track.”
Marco Silva (Olympiacos coach): “It’s the right result. Bayern are very strong opponents, they’re the best team in Europe. The defeat is what we expected, but there were still a few things I didn’t like. We didn’t want to concede the goals the way we did. We’ll focus on the next match against Arsenal now, where we need at least a point to qualify.”
