Bayern drawn away to second-tier Bochum

Bayern’s task in the last eight of the 2015/16 DFB Cup will be anything but straightforward after the competition’s record winners were handed an away tie against second division VfL Bochum in Wednesday evening’s draw.

The Reds and the Ruhr Valley outfit have crossed swords in the cup on four previous occasions, with FCB progressing to the next round three times, once after a replay. VfL prevailed in the first meeting in the 1967/68 semi-finals. The teams last met four years ago in the 2011/12 Round of 16, with Bayern requiring a late Arjen Robben strike to seal a 2-1 win.

Bochum beat FSV Salmrohr 5-0, Kaiserslautern 2-0 and Bayern’s bitter rivals TSV 1860 2-0 to reach the quarter-finals. FCB defeated FC Nöttingen 3-1, holders VfL Wolfsburg by the same score and SV Darmstadt by the only goal of the game to book their place in the last eight.

The quarter-final ties will be played on Tuesday 9 and Wednesday 10 February next year. The final takes place at Berlin’s famous Olympic Stadium on 21 May 2016.
