Here we go again. After a 33-day winter break FC Bayern, top at Christmas, open the second half of the current Bundesliga campaign with an away fixture at Hamburg SV (20:30 CET). fcbayern.de has collated the stats and facts on the first competitive match of the year.
Unbeaten in six years
FC Bayern travel to Hamburg for the first competitive match in the second half of the season on the back of an impressive and successful run against HSV. The record champions have not lost to the team from the Hanseatic city in 14 competitive meetings (11 wins, 3 draws), scoring 53 goals along the way. The last defeat against HSV was six years ago on 26 September 2009. The match in Hamburg ended in a 1-0 win for the hosts. The HSV coach back then was Bruno Labbadia, who is in charge again now.
Records in Bayern’s favour
This will be Bundesliga match number 102 between FCB and HSV. The only more frequent fixture in the league is Hamburg v Werder Bremen (103). The record: 60 Bayern wins, 22 draws and 19 HSV victories. The goal difference of 229 for and 100 against also clearly reflects the superiority of the Reds over Hamburg. Bayern have not beaten any other team in the top flight as often.
The past four opening matches in the second half of the Bundesliga seasons have seen Bayern clock up two wins and two defeats. Last year FCB kicked off in January with a 4-1 defeat at VfL Wolfsburg. At the same time, that is the only loss for the men from Munich in the last ten Friday night games (7 wins, 2 draw).
The North v South Clásico between HSV and FCB guarantees goals: No other Bundesliga clash has produced as many goals (229) as the meeting of the record champions and the Hanseatic side. Only five of the previous 101 games have ended goalless - all in Hamburg.
HSV nightmare Robben
Hamburg SV are favourite Bundesliga opponents for Arjen Robben. The Dutchman has been involved in twelve goals against HSV and has not scored more often against any other Bundesliga team (8). Robben, who celebrates his 32nd birthday the day after the match, also has four assists to his credit.
Zwayer the man in the middle
The Friday night opener against Hamburg SV is in the hands of experienced referee Felix Zwayer from Berlin. The 34-year-old match official has refereed two Bayern matches this term: the 3-0 win at Darmstadt and the 3-1 reverse at Borussia Mönchengladbach. The estate agent will be assisted by Florian Steuer and Harm Osmers with Michael Weiner in the role of fourth official.
